Discovering the Performing Arts

Teacher Matt has developed a theater and cinema experience only someone in 'the biz' can dream up. Kids will start with some intro-to-acting warmups that are good for budding performers or anyone with butterflies in their bellies! Light exercises will set the scene, and help Teacher Matt determine which way to steer his young company. For experience-goers who are naturally shy, Teacher Matt has just the thing, and always keeps things light, fun, creative, and conscientious of everyone's comfort-level in the spotlight.

Once loosened up, improv games will prompt laughter and get kids to pay attention to their surroundings. By exploring one's emotions, and how they can be acted out through facial expressions, dialogue, and writing, children will start to delve into acting (which is, of course, reacting!) and storytelling. Storyboarding is also on this experience's call sheet. By the end, kids will walk away with a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence that extends far beyond the reaches of the theatre. That's a wrap! 🎬

This experience is available as one-time but best as a multi-week series where children will develop themes and an entire production.

About Matt

Emmy-Winning Screenwriter and Home Cook

Teacher Matt is an award-winning script writer, editor, and Hollywood storyteller. His credits span decades, with notable WGA and Emmy awards (2020, 2019, 2018) honoring his outstanding writing contributions to the daytime drama, "The Young and the Restless." Teacher Matt has worked on countless independent film projects, and has been recognized at dozens of festivals for his screenplays. In his own words, "It’s an absolute joy to see a student’s face light up when they realize that learning something new has just opened a series of opportunities they never knew existed. Each day is one of discovery, for all of us, and I would love to help others embrace that with an open and interested mind."

Having been born with a heart murmur, Matt has always had to watch what he eats. As a result, he's spent countless hours scouring through cookbooks, experimenting with all sorts of healthy meals and snacks (for better or worse), and creating some of his own recipes. A writer at heart, Matt knows the importance of balancing work and meal prep time. In fact, it's cooking and creating recipes that relaxes him - it's as though each meal is a story that he's creating, and every ingredient adds to the story and (hopefully) makes it better, ultimately leading to a conclusion that everyone's happy with.

Matt is vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19.

What Parents Are Saying

Our Grassopper experience was amazing! I have four very curious kids at different ages with different interests, and the experience had all four of them engaged the whole time. Also, as an educator, I was very impressed with how the teacher led the program. She obviously knew what she was doing, and the minute she left, my kids were asking for another experience.

Matt was great and guiding my kids through pretend play. He gave them more structure and ideas to take their storytelling to the next level. Such a fun afternoon for them and for me too!

- Jordan M.

My children had the best time with their teacher. They were learning about making movies and writing story lines and plots. They were completely engaged the whole time and are begging for me to have Matt back as soon as possible. Normally I struggle to find babysitters that can engage my children and for this 2 hour experience that wasn’t a problem at all. He could have been there 2 more and they would have loved it.
