Fun with Chess! provides kids with a fundamental understanding of the game of chess, and is designed to foster a love of logic, problem solving, and hopefully the desire to deepen one's learning of strategy and games! While kids will learn the rules of the games, Connor creates an atmosphere where participants challenge one another and become better friends by collaborating and playing with each other.
Beginning with a quick lesson that helps to evaluate kids' and/or the group's general skill level, there is much game play throughout the weekly experiences, during which Connor will provide individual instruction as kids play one another. Other activities depending on age, level, and interest include introduction to the board and pieces, ways to 'check,' freeze dance movement breaks where dancers move as chess pieces, and general integration of concepts through creativity, activity, and games ♟️
Gather a group of friends to turn up the fun, and the price goes down for everyone.
Connor is a musician and chess player now in his last year of university. He started playing chess in 1st grade, and has been an enthusiastic lover of the game and the way chess' logical reasoning has lent itself to other parts of his life ever since. He has been working closely with kids for the past 7 years as a music teacher, math and english tutor, camp counselor, and youth chess instructor. His teaching philosophy reflects back to his own experiences as a kid where his most positive learning experiences were with teachers who really cared about what they were teaching. Connor is a lifelong learner himself!
Connor is AED, First Aid, and CPR certified. He is vaccinated against COVID-19.
