Checkmate Champs: A Fun Journey Into Chess invites students to embark on an exciting adventure into the world of knights, kings, and strategy. Through captivating games, interactive challenges, and skill-building exercises, kids will dive into the fascinating game of chess. As they learn to think several moves ahead and develop critical problem-solving skills, they'll also make new friends and enjoy some friendly competition.

In this multi-week series, students will explore the chessboard, discovering the unique movements of each piece and the secrets to opening moves, mid-game tactics, and epic checkmates. Mini-tournaments and team activities will keep their competitive spirits high and make every session a celebration of learning and fun. 🏆 Whether they’re new to chess or looking to sharpen their skills, children will leave this experience with confidence and a greater appreciation for this classic game. 🥳

Parking Instructions

You can park at any available spot at the main parking lot on Ortega St.

Arrival Instructions

When you arrive, please meet Jamal and Aaryn in the cafeteria. You can enter through the Ortega Street entrance, and the cafeteria is immediately on the left. They will show you to your classroom where your students will be waiting for you. 

Departure Instructions

Parents may pick students up during the class, but any students remaining at the end of the experience can be sent to their respective ASLP teachers (they should know where to go, but if they don't they can be dropped in the cafeteria and a staff member will take them to their teacher).

Music, Chess and Sports Teacher
Originally from Ireland and with a Bachelor's degree in Art and Design, Stephen discovered his passion for teaching while working as a camp counsellor as a teenager. He specializes in teaching music, chess and sports, and brings a diverse set of skills to his teaching, incorporating painting, making music, and surf tenets and culture. Stephen believes in the power of a fun, varied education and strives to inspire and support student growth through his multifaceted experiences and enthusiasm for learning.
