Assigning seating helped the flow a lot today, as did having teachers who made sure students stayed in line while checking in We had more students working on homework today, which felt like a huge win - it felt like it came out of the auditorium being calmer than yesterday with assigned seating More students were also engaged with drawing and coloring today Making asks of students before giving them a snack also helped a lot -- today's ask was for them to label a folder to put their coloring pages and drawings into Continuing to dismiss at 4 was helpful, the USF volunteer + Noe were very helpful in supporting students in homework -- I messaged during session in the Slack about getting information from teachers + parents about the kind of homework their students are assigned / ways they'd like for their students to be supported, so I can make more direct asks / nudges I am thinking about grouping students by grade so that they can work on homework together

~ Students created folders for their after school work (coloring, drawing) ~ Students worked on homework packets ~ Played soccer, basketball

It went both more smoothly in the entering the auditorium, and the offering activities to kids, and difficult in getting students to stay focused in a quiet time activity - but it was very helpful to have the consequence of calling parents/staff + the 4pm as the ending for the quiet time [so they know it is finite] I have some ideas that I will try in the next session (mentioned in my first answer)

I retrieved the attendance [which is now in a binder, with previous daysโ€™ sheets, and the key card and keys], and chatted with Ms. Tatiana at the front desk about all of the supplies she organized in the cubbies in the teacherโ€™s lounge, which I really appreciated Checked in students at the front of the auditorium, which was really helpful + had Noe pass out snacks, which was great [in the future, thinking that we will have students be more spaced out] I labeled off 5 tables with post-it notes to split students between, laid out supplies and gave students three choices between homework, coloring pages, reading [in the future, thinking that students need to first pick out an activity and get settled in *before* they get a snack] Students kept getting up / distracted / bored, they wanted to chat with their friends and otherwise kept running around a bit [thinking about ways to redirect or harness some of this social energy into a shared activity with the opening circle] Students said that they did not have homework, but Ms. Lara confirmed that everyone should have homework at this point + would ask teachers to ask students to write homework down in their binder At 4pm we lined them up dismissed them to play outside We watered the plants, played jump rope, volleyball, and soccer outside, then did some drawing Noe also brought drawing materials, and there were some lovely drawings at the end of different students that they did I texted families about lost & found items

Today went smoother, in thanks to both the USF volunteer, Jose, and the enrichment teacher, Noe โ€” it was also helpful to walk through some student norms with Ms. Lara and for her to be out on the blacktop to establish some ground rules with students โ€” I also feel at this point pretty familiar with the general flow, logistical details, and familiarity with the students I am excited to craft more programming knowing that having a separate space from the other concurrent after school activities (which was throwing me off a bit) to create a check in ritual

~ Students lined up at the top of the steps as I signed them in, and then another teacher passed them snacks ~ Chatted with Ms. Lara about having teachers bring students all the way into the auditorium instead of the black top for check-in [for the future - planning to label the tables to split students up between, and to make time for check in ritual ~ ^ recognizing this did not previously occur because my first day was back to school night, when the auditorium was not available / the meeting on the blacktop made it hard to establish norms ~ Students engaged in movement exercises with the enrichment teacher, and then there was outdoor play - soccer and tag ~ Worked on homework with a student in the auditorium

it went smoothly โ€” appreciated Niharikaโ€™s support! the group got smaller about halfway through, the last parent picking up rang the front doorbell but couldnโ€™t reach anyone, so thinking of adding my number to the front so they can reach me

played with a fort builder set, worked on homework, some students played soccer/ping pong, others on the playground

Test

Questions for Grasshopper: ~ Does MDA pre-determine which 20 kids will be a part of the class for the day? ~ Who is substituting for me on the days I am out? ~ What other ways can I support the enrichment teacher for the day? (priming students + directing students to them/ keeping time) ~ Do enrichment teachers need to check out with me any way? Notes: ~ Today was a sweet day in terms of introducing myself and saying hi to as many students as I could and responding to some day-of details [change in space + additional students] ~ Students had freeplay on the playground before moving into the gym [played soccer, volleyball, tictactoe] and some students worked on homework ~ I was grateful for the presence of additional adults, there were additional kids who were not in aftercare but were in the mix because of back to school night ~ It wasn't clear which students were intended for the enrichment class - wondering about the process of either allowing students to opt-in or assigning them ~ It was back to school night, so there were maybe more students than usual + the usual auditorium wasnโ€™t quite useable yet for settling kids into homework, so we went to the gym for the free play time ~ I appreciated the support of staff for signing in + snack handoff -- still figuring out the flow as kids are coming from multiple directions ~ Appreciated the presence of multiple adults while everyone was on the playground ~ There was a student who injured their thumb, and Jack (the USF volunteer) helped me escort someone to the front office ~ There were two students who got into a fight on the playground so I stepped in between them to separate them - I talked to each of them separately about what happened - sounded like some ongoing interpersonal thing, tried to talk to one student [am also asking MDA in Slack on any procedures they have there] ~ It was helpful for there to be multiple adults when there was a need for water, or someone got injured ~ Said bye to each student as they got signed out with parents
