Magical and Fantastical Creatures

So for today's class, I really definitely thought more about having like a more solid theme and making that more more clearer and more parent of the beginning at the beginning of class. So for today's class, I really emphasize the theme of making Phoenix's. And so for that obviously emphasizing the use of feathers. So there were no major behavioral issues but there was a student that was cutting feathers and that ended up creating a lot of like confetti dust. From the, you know, the feather crafts. So you know, we kind of had a, we created a classic romantic not be doing that next time but overall went, well, the kids made a variety of things related to Phoenix's. They really got into drawing and I also made it a point to print out a bunch of colored ink, examples of, you know, different types of Phoenix's but they could draw just from the internet. But there was feedback about having step-by-step instructions and of course, I should have thought about that before, but I'm gonna Could definitely see if I can find any resources on having like, step-by-step instructions with bits and pieces at a time of how to draw a phoenix or, you know, whatever the theme for the for the day is, so that's kind of something. I'm going to focus on for next class but overall today's class was just another good engaged therapeutic arts and crafts class.

So, for today's class, the kind of challenge topic or the topic for the creatures that they can make today, was aquatic creatures, but with also, the choice to, you know, of course, make whatever they want. But really, really trying to challenge them to make. Make that category of creatures. So I had the same materials that I did. Last time I do regret not getting more of the faux fur that they requested. But I, you know, keep in mind when they say that, they like a material to kind of try to get it next next class. So that's my plan. So they had a lot of fun with the class. There were no major behavioral problems but at some point when I opened my computer to give them a, you know, just example, I think that there was a, not a good understanding of this is the teachers property and you can't use the computer so that did happen. So, I think that will now become one of the class rules or class agreements but other than that, there are really no issues the kids. Really engaged in what they were doing today and everybody ended up making something really creative and really fun again. So, yeah, it was a good class and I have some ideas for. I think how I'm going to adapt these class going forward, maybe incorporate more examples of beginning of the class of actual magical Fantastical creatures that they can make and somehow making it more challenging and engaging for them than just saying, oh you use your creativity and go crazy. Easy with the supplies that I provided. So I'm going to find ways to do that. And of course, feel free to suggest some resources on that. But I think everything went well today and I'm excited for I guess. The rest of the series. - those dates that I will be out. So, March 3rd through the 17th so that's a recap of today's class.

So the goal for today's class was just like really continue working on turning that story that we had been working really hard on writing into an actual script, right? With very distinct like speaking parts are acting parts and making a very clear like what everybody needs to actually do during the final performance, the kids really did enjoy working on this, my plan was to have us all sit at the table and you know work all on it at the same time. What ended up happening was the kids preferred kind of coming back to this and engaging in some very random improv activities, kind of in the interim in the meantime, and then coming back to help me write the script. So it was very collaborative, but it was a bit of structure, but it actually seemed to work well because we made some progress in traction with the actual script was which was good. The goal for next class is going to be like, I guess to print it out so that we can actually practice it live and really see how that's going to go for our final performance. So it's super exciting on that. What else do we do today? So I started the class out by writing the rules on the board as usual and then really making the main goal clear on the board of we're going to actually work on finishing turning our story into a script today. So again, we got pretty far with that, which was good. So the other thing we were working on today was charades was kind of like the closing activity. So, and they also prefer to do free dry, which is totally fine because it's, like creative element. That I obviously really want in this class, so they kind of did a mix of free draw and actually drew some beautiful pictures. The drawing skills, there are really really wonderful. So doing free drama and doing the charades to kind of wrap up the glass. So that's just an overall summary of today's class.

So, for today's arts and crafts magical, Fantastical creatures class, I decided to bring some new medium, new materials or materials with the kids could use, you know, just to see what would happen. And I ended up bringing in like fake fur and feathers. And so the theme of today's class was or sorry yesterday's class was to make a flying creature. If you could but it ended up being very popular with the kids, the faux fur So a lot of the kids ended up making something that use that material, and I asked them to tell me a story about each of their creatures and, you know, really challenge them a little bit to think about their creativity or their creative process. So, overall, the class went really well. There actually were no issues with like Behavior or anything like that. The kids had a lot of fun and it up kind of being able to break through and develop some more rapport with them, which I don't feel. Like, I was able to the previous classes, which was good. So we were just definitely joking about stuff and so that was fun. But overall it was a good class. They were engaged and they all said that they had fun. So I was glad to hear that. But overall, that's just a very basic recap of yesterday's class for arts and crafts magical. Fantastical creatures,

So, for today's class, we continued working on our character developments. So we basically charted out on the Whiteboard and had a brainstorming activity about physical traits that everyone's character would have and then like internal or non tangible and like more emotional traits of the characters would have. So we had a really fun time just coming up with like detailed visualizations of like what everybody's character would look like for the final play and then they To start working on the costume designs. We started also listing and thinking about like, materials, that were needed. So it was overall, very fun discussion. The class went. Well, there were no major behavioral issues. You know, I started a class by seven classroom rules, like, no yelling, no running in the classroom excetera, which worked out pretty well, there was a little bit of running and sometimes it's hard to kind of keep that under control, but I do. I do let them know that if that continues, that I will call somebody as part of the bookends staff to kind of No, come talk to them or take them out of the class, so they do know that. So it wasn't too bad today. So basically, it was a class in the we wrapped up class with the closing activity, which was a freeze dance party where they get to request songs that I do bring like a kind of a little portable speaker that I have, but they also want to do some free Draw 2 and also even like sketch out their characters. So that was a fun thing for them to do the closeout class. So overall, that's a summary of today's class.

So, this was the second class or session with this class, after the break, it was good to see them. Again, today's theme that I had prepared was design, your own magical and Fantastical creature. So, come up with your own using parts of different animals, which is mostly what people ended up sticking to is a total of, I think five kids in the today's class. So what we ended up doing was people to different stuff? So they were, you know, they they did aquatic animals. Is that flying animals and people definitely like dragons so that came up again and I did ask them what they would like to see the next class and a lot of them, said dragons again. So just, you know, just trying to get an idea from them of. You know, what would they like working on the most? Also, ask them about materials that they like to see for the next classes. I did get some new materials for this one but I really want to know what they want to use what kind of media materials that they like. So it turns out that they like the shiny sparkly iridescent paper which I also like and I'll try to find that but Are basically brought gems and colorful iridescent like wrapping paper that they sell at Target. So it was fun to kind of mix up the materials a little bit. Basically, I started today's class with, you know, setting the classroom rules this time. I wrote them on a single white board that's on the classroom. So, you know, they can refer back to that if they forgot this class rules are, I didn't have any major behavior issues or anything. With this class has a pretty easy group, but I do really get the sense that, you know, some of them do get bored easily and I really We don't want that to happen so you know, that's why I keep asking them. What would you like to do next class? How can I how can I make this class? Most fun? I could possibly can be for you. That's very important for me. So I got some good feedback from the kids on that, so hopefully I can bring that into the next class and make it more of a challenge for them as well, to keep them engaged because I really want them to be engaged. Not just have to go to the arts and arts and crafts class and just have to do the same thing every week. I wanted to look a little bit different every week, but overall, that was a summary of today's class. It went well, and it was fun to see them again.

So today was the first class being back after the long holiday, winter break and the class overall went very well. We actually had only two out of the four usual kids. So it was a much smaller group and seemed more of a, like a one-on-one studies study session. So we basically spent this class diving back into our story with the goal of kind of making it more of a script. What we ended up doing is the kids wanted to work on costume design actually, so we jumped into that and spend probably the majority of the duration of the class working on costume design, as well as refining, our story a little bit and really asking if it made sense to us, that if it was something that we could perform and also coming up with ideas about what that might look like for the final performance. So, towards the end of the class, instead of having a dance party, as kind of like the closing activity or a reward activity for a good cause We did free draw which was actually proposed by the students. So that was also a good way to close out the class. And and then I also asked the Drama teacher and the school and I need to get more information about this about whether the stage of the school would be accessible for the final performance or not. So still need to understand that, if it's not going to be available, no problem at all. But we would still need to figure out where the final performance will happen, but ER, all this was a good class and it was really nice to see the kids. Again, the energy was a little bit high at times but I you know, Circle back to the class rules which I wrote on the board. And that's kind of standard practice now. So overall, what went fine? And there were no major issues. It was fun.

So this is a summary of supervising, the after-school program today at Mission Dolores Academy, my gosh of the school and immediately they told us kind of where we were needed. There was myself and another grasshopper teacher, we went to the classroom where we help the teacher just you know the kids under control and safe. We engage them with some wipe activities. They were mostly on screens and laptops playing video games, I think. But we were basically, you know, there to add games already, any kind of fun ideas for activities for them. I've worked with the other juror, forgot her name but I have I remember her from a observation that I did, I worked pretty well with her. You know, we worked well with with the kids together and then right after that we were in that classroom about an hour, we went to supervise their performance or the Christmas performance downstairs. And then we were actually told that they didn't really need our help. I guess for the rest of the evening. Evening the rest of the afternoon. So kind of an early dismissal but essentially it went well yeah that's my summary.

So today's class over all went. Well, this was the first class of I think the series is about 10 weeks long, so this was the introduction session to really get to know the kids in the class and the personalities and introduce myself and what the class is all about. So I basically explain the focus of the class being magical and pests Fantastical creatures over the next few weeks. We were going to basically make up our best version of creatures like fairies dragons unicorns. A Aliens. And then I was going to reserve about two or three classes for a make up, your own fantasy animal session, where they can basically create their own made-up fantasy creature. So this class, we spent the whole time basically, doing Dragons or fairies. So you know, I gave them an option there because some of them actually seem to want to do fairies that were dragons. There were total of five kids, who was definitely a small group of kids. And so, you know, it's a good group of kids. So we spend the time really getting to know each other The last both are the first five minutes of class. I, of course, I went over the classroom rules, and the, the last 5 minutes of class, were spent playing a game called cat and mouse, which was recommended by actually one of the students and it seemed like a pretty good way to close out a class, as a fun kind of movement, break activity with some teamwork and team building in it as well. You know, the for the kids to really create those those good connections amongst each other. So, All this class went well and I think I'm actually going to be looking at More arts and crafts materials that I can bring for next class to really amp up the creative options for the kids on what they can make and what they can make those things with. So yeah looking forward to the next class and thank you.

So I started off this class with going over the class agreements, as usual, it's been spending about 5 minutes or less on that. I'm finding the approaching it as a classic grievance versus you know, set class rules works very well. You know, keeping them on the same page in terms of all created this together. So thank you for that tip. And then so basically the folks of this class was to work on our story and not just work on a store, but really refine it more and make it more of a story rather than, you know, a bunch of random events happening. So, I was really challenging them today to really look at it as a story and not just, you know, random things happening. So what are you two characters doing? And how is that creating like a bigger picture, a bigger story and really shaping that story. So that was kind of the challenge of today's class. This also ends up being a really good Writing Practice. So getting them to actually write their roles on the board was something. I had them do so that they feel more involved in it and also so they can get that handwriting practice, which I feel like is also a good thing to incorporate I guess. This class. So really get instead of getting everything. Instead of getting just one person's ideas, we got everybody's ideas in terms of what they each wanted their roles to look like and what that looks like on the Whiteboard, we had the idea of incorporating music into the play which was something that somebody recommended and seem like they all like that idea. So the another activity that I had planned after this that we did not get to was another improv like whiteboarding activity, where everybody goes around and builds on a character and makes up a silly character, silly or not still adjust. A character we didn't get that. Sorry we didn't get that. We didn't get to that today, but we'll probably do a next time. They seem too excited about it and then finally a wrapped up the class with a freeze dance, or freeze. Was it called Freeze free draw sessions. So not everybody wanted to dance, some people wanted to draw. So I basically said okay, when the Music Stops you will stop either drawing or dancing and they seem to like that a lot. So that could be like a new thing that we can close out class with. But overall it was a good class.
